Yes indeed he is a POSER! A FAKE, an IMPOSTOR! I always knew his art was done with a vector program and that he never actually drew any of them. In some graphic programs all you have to do is have a photo, hit a button, and there you have it! You have a vector design (like you see in the Shepard Fairey posters).
This is extremely obvious in that famous Obama poster he made. He got famous by plastering his OBEY/Andre the giant posters all over the place, but to consider him an artist is crazy! I would like to give him a piece of paper and a pencil to see if he can draw like the posters he has printed in the past. Actually I doubt he can draw anything at all... really!

But aside from all this just today I found that he also steals art as well! And that makes me angry cause that has happened to me before.
One thing is to be a fake, another one is to steal someone's work (which to me makes him less of a human being). I am enraged and grossed out about his FAKENESS! I would appreciate other artists or anyone who reads this to EXPOSE him, and his FRAUD SYNDROME.

Enlightening and sad.
Since his Andre the Giant stickers, Shepard has been repurposing visuals created by other people. In a way, what he does is no different than musicians sampling tracks to create something new. That's his voice, and that's ok.
At one time, he was part of the real street graffiti art scene; not the gallery graffiti shows. What I see is an artist who settled on his success. He stopped evolving and chose churn over art, and he's more talented than that.
We're all still expecting him to be a certain kind of artist, and he isn't right now. He acts more like a corporation than a conscientious artist these days. He's contradicting himself and it feels cheap and shady. The same guy who mocks corporatism or Cultural Revolution propaganda smoothly defends his decision to have Obey t-shirts cranked out in communist China to satisfy our consumer sweet tooth. He says we're destroying the environment while happily selling us a set of Obey coasters.
I went to a relatively recent SF show and was disappointed to see that Shepard is now referencing Shepard. He had the same Angela Davis images, the bombs, the soldiers--again.
Shepard Fairey is at a point where he can evolve, or go down as the guy who made thousands of wry, red posters of borrowed political art. And coasters.
See what he does next, then decide if he's a fake.
You bring a few good points there Mr. Anonymous. I hate to sound negative but he just does not settle well with me at all. And we all know HE KNOWS what he is doing is wrong but he continues anyway.
People will buy his garbage because its a "Shepard" piece but not because it is good. He is just famous for being famous more then for his artistic skills (if any). He is more of a trend then an art movement.
I am not really that much interested anymore in the matter. But when I first wrote the post I was quite annoyed and bothered by the whole thing. He is just another statistic to me now. You can call him whatever you want, but please don't call him an artist, that's all. I probably would have liked him for just showing his real original art rather then taking someone else's art and not giving them credit and making it seem like it was his original illustration.
All-and-all I am more concern what damage he is doing to the art community by this example. It is horrible really.
This guy Fairey has made a career out of lifting images that don’t belong to him then passing them off as his own. As an artist myself this is the lowest thing you can do. He doesn’t deserve any support as an artist. You people that believe he doesn’t do this are gravely misinformed and need to do your homework before you embrace your poster boy. Now I see the Obama picture was lifted as well! Great Artist indeed. Great hack non-artist is more like it.
Any of you actual graphic artists who know how to use illustrator? You all sound like a bunch of pretentious cry babies. Push a button and it's done huh? Do your own homwork. I am not the biggest fan of Shepard but seriously people... Don't hate the player. I wish I was getting paid too.

The Phantom Street Artist has said:
People will one day speak of a Future Day and Time when a coined term will come from the voice of the streets. The term will be a definitive colloquial called Fairey Use TM to mean when an artist out of disrespect betrays important historical and revolutionary cultures, languages and authors to advance his own selfish interest in greed and mammon. This is called Fairey Use TM when an artist steals from other artists, cultural references and fails to give proper credit then tampers with federal evidence then hides behind important movements like the creative commons and attempts to escape justice under interpretative legal defense.
In a sentence:
Mommy is that artist pulling a Fairey Use?

Shepard Fairey does not settle with me either. He is sneaky. I think he hopes people won't recognize his images from past posters and artwork. Mostly, his political views and intentions are questionable. I don't like when someone makes political artwork that really is ambiguous in meaning. Do you believe in the images that you are making? Or are you making them because you have a history of being a street artist and these are the types of images that appeal to people?
However, I think that criticizing his drawing skills is not really a valid point. Many people can draw with the pen tool freehand on the computer but it's harder for them to hold a pencil and draw. The fact that he takes most of his images and copies them might say that he can't even draw that well on the computer. I don't think that saying if one can't draw he can't be an artist.
As for the Obama image, I don't know of a program where you can just hit a button and it separates it into vector layers. Basically, Fairey traced over the Image taken by Associated Press (which they are actually demanding credit for) in different steps to get the layered colors to look right. This doesn't make him a fake artist, it just makes him a bogus one. If he had credited where the image came from, since he did not draw it himself, it would be fine. Appropriation is fine when it is done with clear intentions. If it's not, give credit where credit is due.
All in all, I do not trust Shepard Fairey, even if some of his prints are eye-catching.

The diff between Fairey and Warhol are vast. Warhol never claimed to have invented the images he reused, Fairey steals and hopes he doesn't get caught, smiles his charming milkfed all-american boy look when he does get busted, and everyone forgives him. He isn't "inspired by" anyone, he isn't even "copying" someone's style, he's stealing their images. He knows a little bit of Adobe Illustrator, woop de do da. This isn't collage even. Buy his crap or don't I don't give ... rat's ass. but don't delude yourselves that it's "important"
