Is "PRINT" dead?

Once again I ask myself the question about the death of: printed printed publications. I am glad I came across this short symposium on the subject.

Here Jacek Utko talks about the death of newspaper but at the same time talks about strategies that can definitely be applied in many areas of design and art when it comes to deliver a product or final finished piece. It is very uplifting and motivating to listen someone talk about different solutions in a logical method. It's also reinforces ideas I've had about my personal work when it comes to pushing my own abilities.

I think a lot of times we lower the bar for ourselves and never really get to taste our potential AT ALL, a lot of times we think we are going to walk right into a launching pad rather then work-to actually create it and construct it ourselves. I am extremely critical about my designs and art, but a lot of times I feel I bit odd about having such a strict discipline when it comes to my work and designs.

I think he said it best in his closing sentence "good is not enough"( now I don't feel that bad or odd).

PS. printed publications would not be an endangered species if more people approached things like Jacek.

This was so great!

As a former newspaper designer, I struggled mostly not for creativity, but with my superiors. Two things he said I wish he could have told my bosses:
Give the designer power
and
Designers should be involved from start to end.

I feel more and more designers and journalists come into the business with this concept already ingrained, but the existing structures in the industry restrain them from reaching their full potential. Sure, all newspapers have either recently undergone a redesign or are in the process, but like he said, it's not about how it looks - it is about the product as a whole. It's hard to make an impact as a designer when your bosses feel your job is to wrap the product in pretty paper.

This video was too good..
Being good is actually not enough.. One has to push yourself to get better..

Victoria- you are so right, alot of times designers are just looked as creators of "pretty visual things" and that's it, nothing more.

And yes... in some companies and projects one is allowed only-so- much-freedom.

JD- Yes!... and it always good to hear it from someone else sometimes, even if its something we already know.

For me- after a while some things get placed in the back of my mind and they get lost in the shuffle. I forget to re-file and re-organize ideas I've always had, and through default they don't get the priority I needed to give them.

Rice Candy...its been awhile. How's everything in the mag business? I see print is dead or is it? Happy Easter to you and your loved ones. I hope your life is filled with joy and happiness.

This was a great video. I'm so happy you posted it. I really like his idea and his vision. I love the everything is attainable....and inspiration/vision/determination is the second lesson. Give designers more freedom and wow it will change even the most mundane paper in the world. Thanks for the lesson.

I just bought the W with Madonna on the front and why did I buy it b/c it just jumped out at me it looked like a cool slick poster and she looked awesome on it. It's eye candy for the senses. Good design goes a long way. Keep it up you got great talent and don't be so hard on yourself.

While TV and home video sure make an impact on the "Movie Experience"...they haven't killed it! You could never get the full effect of the Ten Commandments...as seen from the front row...in a home video... *; ) Neither will holding a truly beautiful book or art production piece ever be eclipsed by Googling!

Beautiful- Thank you... and welcome. Hope to see a comment from you again.

Nancy- I very much agree with you. This is why I want to do this magazine. There is something so amazing and special about holding an actual printed publication that will cannot be replaced by online publications. And also you can take it anywhere and keep it with you as long as you want.

Well said, Rice Candy!
I've heard that sentiment over and over...that's why printed matter isn't going to die anytime soon.
