It's isolation alone is calming pause. The day could be longer then usual.

The feel of the images here are as if- there is no rush...we can take all the time in the world to observe... there's no stop sign, or red traffic light in sight. We can create a few minutes of commercials for our visuals if we wish. Nothing but our own advertising to disconnect for a few moments.

Yes...this is what I was looking for tonight since I can't sleep. Something light and almost weightless, but heavy enough to get my attention. Thanks Sycamores & Cedars for the simple yet delightful gallery.

I am not guessing in what the direction the movie will be heading into...or anything about the story, but it does not matter. I am sold purely on the imaginative appearance of the animated teaser.

I am loving the broken straight lines and the circular accents all around. I hope the full length film expands the visual concept and leads away from the usual.

Nick Schmidtz just send me over his latest poster design, and I am cycling the display for all of you to see. This is another amazing poster by Nick that seems to follow once again the colors of the season, by bringing reminiscence of a color in a- holiday color palette.

The last post from Nick's work that was presented here on ricecandy.net back in February was the "I'm pretty sure I like you a lot" design- that made quite a buzz around the interwebs (yes I did type "interwebs" there's a reason for that), after making its debut here on Ricecandy. Hopefully once again people will appreciate this one as well as before. This is a true testament that Nick has a the right formula to create a stylish cool typography design good enough to print as a poster.

This means: I hope to see one of these posters on my wall to accompany that winning streak moment with a visual affirmation. Hell Yeah!

Greno "The Dream"

The Dream is an amazing piece by the artist that goes by the name of Greno (first picture from the top, click to enlarge! ). There is so much for me to say about just this single piece, but after looking through all of his art, I found more important evidences to confirm that Greno really has something going on with his style (as far unique and captivating)

The Dream carries a lot of textures and tones of blue which makes me think of various finishes and weights of denim fabric. All the decorations and dotted touches are in the right places. The square and checkered details add a false sense of dimension but still keep it fun visually. Last but not least, I adore the contrast of all the colors focused in one hand, as if there was a transition ready-to-happen from blue tones- to a full mix of colors about to spread all over her body.

In conclusion... sometimes you need a dysfunctional and messy display in order to regroup and make sense of things. It brings a better focus to what's more interesting or important. Greco’s art presents a good combination of- somewhat messy visuals, incorporated inside a basic portrait drawing. But one can enjoy the more organized details or the less complicated, depending on your taste, but this is what makes it interesting and a joy to look at.

since making my own photo montage of my trip through japan (see one post down) i have noticed a trend in this method of recording a journey. by no means am i saying that i pioneered this, as most of the videos i have found since making my own were actually made before my own video, but i just find it interesting that i had never really though about it till now.

anyway, i have 2 amazing photo montage videos to share today. the first one, is called "The Longest Way" and documents Christopher Rehage's 1 year walk across china. i love how much his face changes over that time.

next up, Chris Boardman's daily commute through london is documented in an awesome interactive flash video, which adds a nice three dimensionality to the oft photographed london bridge.

hey guys.

i would like to say hello. my name is qwux and i have been asked to be an occasional guest poster here on Rice Candy, and it's probably a good idea to introduce myself so you can all get a feel of where i am coming from.

so the brief history of qwux is as follows. i hate capitals, i just think they are ugly. i am currently studying visual arts at sydney college of the arts, majoring in printmedia. i am addicted to screenprinting, inks and paper. i run a little site called if forever exists (at www.ifforeverexists.com). i love stars and have 3 tattooed on my arm.

here is some of my recent work, if you like it, there is plenty more around!

first up, my major work from last semester - this poster sucks.
by day, i minimalistic typographical poster, by night, something much, much radder. i never knew photographing glow in the dark was so hard. (all glow images are 10 sec exp. for those who want to know.)

next up, the rad squid deck.

this is a short run (5 only) hand screenprinted deck with my character (sqwux the squid) printed on it.

i also dabble in photography, but i am not calling myself a photographer. i recently spent 2 weeks in japan, and here are all the photos i took put into 1 video.

so thats me in a nutshell! i will be posting up a couple of times in the near future, so i hope you enjoi what i share.

Khristian Mendoza

An obvious representation of photographic work that is steering into a new course from the usual- is the pleasantly distracting “Transparency” set by Khristian Mendoza.

It seems in our current time, what you can-and-can’t-do with photography is non-existent. The restrictions are coming close to a full mute level, and creativity is KING right now. This fantastic set by Khristian Mendoza combines cleverness with illusion, and in other ways then- visually, it literally represents a portal of creativity.

For any of you letting your guard down in creative-photography, there is always someone with an upper-cut of imagination like Khristian Mendoza, ready to wake you up, and stimulate your own work. Though the photographs are simple with the: concept, shots, and materials, they undeniably pack-a-heavy-punch of imagination!

A good decision in the set was the use of a universal language, which were the stencils of well known basic shapes, rather then creating a busy overdone detailed design (which could have easily lost the viewer’s perception)

I can already see it… I can see the legions of imitators… sprouting left-and-right. But before that happens, maybe Khristian can give me a few hints to the recipe of- Transperancy.

(1)Can you tell me about the root that started this idea, and what prompted you to use it with photography?

KM-This wasn’t a well thought idea to begin with, so there was no decision making involved at all. Just one day I brought out the cam and started shooting, and within that time this idea kind of arose, rather than the idea beforehand. I know that’s not so professional but I find that most projects, and more specifically self initiated projects come about from nowhere.

(2)What do you think is more important in photography: originality, style, or well executed results?

KM-Don’t get me wrong, I love photography but I am no expert in it nor am I a photographer. Here and there I come across awesome photo folios that inspire me in what I enjoy. Photography is a whole new dimension to me, because in most cases they are not restricted to a brief and I find most successful photographers have this ability to express themselves through their photography.

(3)To me these photographs are a good transcending example of imagination. What are some of your own personal ethics that are essential to your creations?

KM-I always try to create things that make me happy. If it doesn’t, well then, make it work. That is why I am slightly afraid of entering the industry, concerned that commercial viability will not be my friend.

The other entry I was prepared to post is not completed till I receive further notice. But for now... here are some of my favorites I have come across this month.

I will also be including a series of posts under the title of "Dissecting", which will basically describe and break-down the aesthetics, composition, and perspectives of a SINGLE piece in each post. In the post I will explain WHY the image was chosen, and why it's a good example of inspiration. I want this to be more of a- conversation piece, with more interaction, which will compliment the overall opinion of each particular piece in each series.

Basically I want to know and explain why this image works so well and how it translates to us visually. Rather then focusing on a whole collection of a particular artist/creator/photographer, we can focus on a single composition. I will also include notes from the creator/artist/photographer of the image which will aid the examination and opinion.

Drops

As liquid pearls descent swiftly -giving into gravity. Your mind is already lip-syncing the “drip” that follows after. But just before that conclusion, Charlotte visually shares a short-story of the drops that where.

In my attempt to bring different styles and techniques to control the variety. I have noticed that sometimes the main attraction can also be the subject and more importantly- what you can create with it (example: the matches/ match boxes used in the Laika video post). In this post Charlotte shares her creative photography captures, which include: timing, color gels, coins, Milk, and paints- that create a colorful display... before, during, and after the splash.

Each shot has its own character. Some droplets play follow-the-leader to a larger drop, while time creates a distance from each other. And in other shots, the arrangements of the drops are somewhat reminiscent of a system in outer space. I can’t help not-be-drawn to these images, as they are quite calming, but at the same time they inspire possibilities in my own creative experiments.

I believe 3 questions are now in order.

(1) I would like to learn a bit about your set-up, equipment and the HiViz quit. And also how all of this comes together to capture these great shots. (I have no idea about any of this nor about the HiViz quit and it would be a great insight for others who don’t either)

C- The basis behind these shots is that you can use the flash pulse to freeze the motion you are trying to capture. A flash can pulse at 1/10,000th of a second or even faster depending on the strength of the flash. This is much fast that most normal shutter speeds. To capture the motion in the manner, you first set-up your equipment (to be described in a moment), turn out the lights, open the shutter, perform whatever action that you are trying to capture and make sure your flash fires while you do it, close the shutter, and see what you have captured. This can be done without much fancy equipment, provided you have enough timing and coordination to try to (if you are going to water drop shots) manually fire the flash at the exact moment the drop hits the surface or pool of liquid. This is hard to do...I’ve tried without much success. The best way is to use some sort of kit to trigger the flash. I use kits from HiViz.com. The one I used here is the light activated trigger kit. Basically, you receive a breadboard and a bag of resistors, capacitors, potentiometers, phototransistors, etc...Everything you need to build a circuit that will trigger your flash based on whatever criteria’s you are looking for. There is also a delay built into the circuit so that a drop falling will trigger the circuit, but the flash wont fire until the drop actually hits. As I said, I used the Light Activated circuit, meaning that when light strikes the phototransistor (provided in the kit) the flash is triggered. I have actually done this the hard way, I should have used a photogate trigger, but I couldn't get it to work at the time...fairly certain I fried either the LED or the receiver when I first plugged it in... So, I had to make due for the time being the light activated trigger. To make this work, I took a Laser pen and aimed it directly at the Phototransistor. The flash fires when the light first hits it, but if you leave the laser light pointed at the receiver, it will not fire again until the light is removed and shot at the receiver again. Then, I set up a turkey baster filled with milk, positioned such that any drops that fell would fall through the beam, causing the flash to trigger. The issues I had were that I could not get the droplets to break the beam long enough such that the capacitor had time to recharge (essentially, they weren't breaking the beam long enough to trigger the flash). So I would have to squirt a big stream of milk out of the turkey baster to get the flash to trigger. I was able to get this to work however, at least to an extent, and I eventually was able to be pretty consistent in getting the flash to trigger when I wanted it to. Once the setup was good to go, it was just a matter of picking out food coloring and trying not to make a huge mess. To get the drops to pick up the food coloring, I would just put a drop of two of whatever color(s) I was going for right where I thought the drop from the baster would hit. The surface I was dropping onto was a reflective piece of poster board. At the end of the set containing the high speed shots there are some setup shots with some explanatory notes that you are welcome to use.

(2)Why photograph- drops and liquids?

C-Why not? It’s pretty what happens in such a small length of time. You can't see this reaction with the naked eye and it’s a lot of fun just to see what cool things you can capture. The bright colors and how the milk reacts with them are also very interesting. Also, I am an engineer by profession, so I love projects like this that require me to think outside of the box and figure out how to do things.

(3)The best experience through experimenting so far has been?

C-The best experience is probably going through all of the setup and work, and then sitting back and looking at the LCD screen after every shot to see what I have captured. Every shot is different, some work and some don't, but it’s always a surprise.

Chiara Bautista

Dream-weaving via her imagination into a graphic illustration- is the work presented above by Artist/illustrator Chiara Bautista.

Although it might appear that Chiara’s work seems to root from what is meaningful to her at the moment of creation. Her unique style, references, and symbolic details are what really interested me the most.

Chiara infuses several elements with its own personality and charm that definitely changes the entire theme of the art piece. From a heart-shaped cassette, to octopi tentacles.One cannot ignore these meaningful details in her art, as they add a lot to the total value of her composition.

To know a little more about what goes behind the mechanism of Chiara's creativity, I will share with you the few thoughts I stole from her in response to my questions.

(1)How much does your personal life and emotions affect or influence
your artwork?

CB-... A fair amount, I usually add and take out pieces, or change the composition of an illustration depending on the things happening around me while I'm working.... like the songs I'm listening to, or how good or bad my day was. I think this kind of stuff happens to everybody. At the end we all put a little (or a lot) of ourselves on everything we do.

(2)What is the meaning behind the birds in your art? (I noticed 2
types, can you please tell me what they represent)

CB-The black ones, showing their skeleton, are all those doubtful thoughts that cross your mind when you're about to make a relevant decision. The white one is that thing -or person- you want the most.

(3) Which are your favorite colors of inspiration?

CB-I like black, green, blue and brown. I usually start working with a basic palette of matte colors, and then add some contrast with a bright color, and for this, my favorite is pink.

Guillaume Blanchet

As photography and art continues to get amplified by the internet, great creative videos are also being hatched by the dozens every month. One of the main platforms for this immense wave of new creations being shared on the internet is due to the incubation from sites like Vimeo.

For me Vimeo is like a vitamin that jolts my creativity whenever I need it. But in the other hand, there’s also an overflow of repetitive work displayed there, which gets me a bit hesitant about hitting that play button on new videos that get uploaded constantly. But once-in-a-while I am glad to hit that “I>” button because it’s such a joy for me to find a hidden jewel amongst the many. Such a find can be quite exciting and exhilaration for me, and can quickly turn into a small addictive viewing session. One of those recently fabulous finds comes from French creator- Guillaume Blanchet, in a stop-motion animation video.

Laika- is a 3 min animation Guillaume Blanchet created using matches & match boxes; this video was produced to celebrate the 10th birthday of a famous bar in Montreal (The Laïka). For those of you who may not know- Laïka originally was the name of the first earthling ever sent to space (a female dog). This was in Russia, back in 1957. Not only did Guillaume create a fun animation video, but he also unified the meaning behind the name, plus an actual object from the bar, which then coordinated with the song perfectly.

From the very beginning of the video there’s hints of a visual fun ride. It starts with one creation- creating another, and another, which takes you step-by-step through a small voyage. Guillaume also displays various stop-motion techniques which makes him look like a magician by using basic, and hard-to-figure-out animation tricks.

Whether the internet has created a platform for a new “creative renaissance” or if this is simply the age of the “click-shoot-n-post” generation, I am glad that creativity overall is in a good positive evolving phase. It could get better; it could get boring, overdone, damaged or ruined. But I have confidence we are headed in the right direction. And someone like Guillaume is proof of this.

Now to learn a bit more about the process from Guillaume.

(1)Can you tell us the average amount of pictures and hours spent in this project?

GB- It took me about a month to run some tests, including the on-and-off time. But overall I would say it took me between 40 and 60 hours. For the record, I had the “chance” to have my tonsils removed. Therefore, I spent two weeks out of the agency, at home. As for the pictures, it is tough to estimate as well, I believe it was about 3000(The original version is a little bit longer).

(2)What was the main approach and idea behind Laika?

GB- I live above the Laïka bar. It’s like the extension of my own apartment. The owner (a friend of mine) once had those genuine match boxes sent from Japan. And since he decided to celebrate the 10th birthday of his bar, I asked him to give me ten of those boxes (one for each year). I first tried to see everything that I could do with them in a technical way. Then I followed by writing a script, and after that… it was all just patience :-)

(3)The most important perspective you strive to demonstrate people who view your work is…?

GB-This video was actually very simple and low-cost: 10 boxes, maybe 200 matches, a blue paper and a pair of scissors. I love to be impressed by things that are technically over my understanding - like 3D animation – On the other hand, I also love what comes out of simplicity: everyone understands how it’s made. Simplicity in execution has a nice sharing dimension, because people end up realizing that somehow, they could have done it too.

Steve Wilson

Some dishes are best served cold. And some photos are best served- resisting stability (or full definition). A sample-taste of this type of delicacy is today’s special, which is a colorful interpretation of- an evening at the carnival, by Steve Wilson.

During the day I take several breaks to get away from the desk and my work. I walk around, stretch and view other things completely unrelated to my work. It would be nice to have a daily break where I can just open a door (secretly, hidden in my closet) that gives me immediate access to a fun night at the carnival (especially ala Steve Wilson’s perspective).

The common quality presented across all of these photos are enticing enough to day-dream for a few minutes, at the very least. Each photo well describes the fun factor experience in a carnival. And punctuating the visuals are sprinkles-of-light, where one can measure the speed of joy.

The main appealing substance of this set was that it never lost focus of the theme. And even though that door doesn’t exist, I will settle for the visual play-escape Steve has offered in his photography.

To complete the inspiration and see it through Steve's point-of-view, he was kind enough to answer the following questions.

(1)You work creating graphic illustrations and 3D designs.
Are there any qualities in all of this that influences your
photography?

SW: I think the creative “eye” is present for both my illustrations (3D and 2D) and my photography. That being said I feel that my 3D design work (day job) actually benefits more from my photography than the other way around. Working in 3D you use a lot of virtual lighting and cameras to get the “shot”.

(2)The punch of color you expect from a carnival was
present in this set. What other elements where you attracted
to at the carnival?

SW: The lights and rides was what first attracted me to shoot at the small carnival. It was set up close to my mom’s house (a very small carnival with only a few rides) but a lot of fun to shoot. The most important thing is that it's fun. I just enjoy photography.

(3)What interests you the most about photography overall?

SW: B&W, IR and extreme color is what excites me in photography. I am drawn to images that are there, but are not something that can be seen with the naked eye.

Shuo Cheng

Unspoken words, silent lights, blurry reflections and retired Deja Vus- come together in a play that our mind sets a stage for. If the eyes blink, the curtain falls. But somehow at the end of that second we are able to save it in our memory, picture frame included.

An example of someone who has a visionary quest to capture these moments (in photograph form) is Shuo Cheng. Just slight suggestions of people present is his photos are obvious, but in return this accommodates a better focus to other qualities. And displayed above is a small collection of his photos, which is more of a visual soundtrack then anything else.

The attractive simplicity of the everyday life, plus the mood of the photographer reflecting on the captures- is something my attention enjoys when searching for photos. And Shuo's photography projects some of these qualities very well.

To learn a little more about what goes behind the mind of the photographer, artist or designer (plus any tips explaining their personal approach). I am adding a 3 question part to each post from now on, hopefully this creates a better harmony to each composition.

(1) Can you remember the first photo you took that meant something to you in a creative point-of-view? And why was this significant to you.

SC- It was years ago, when I was still enrolled at the university. I decided to register in a design course (my major was in MIS), which meant I had to stay one more year at the university. During that time, when almost all of my friends were going to graduate, I felt a bit lonely, and uncertain.

One day I climbed to the penthouse of the building, and took some photos. It was a hot day, with not a not cloud in the sky. And I guess something told me to remember the day, the sunshine, and the heat of summer.

(2) How different is your initial vision from your ending result?

SC- I think that's the interesting part of digital photography. You never know what the picture is going to look like. If you don't like it, you just delete it. Sometimes I think a lot before pressing the shutter, and sometimes I don't think at all.

(3) What advice can you give a person like me, who appreciates your style and is starting to experiment with photography?

SC- As Nobuyoshi Araki said: Photography is life. Taking pictures is a way to record your life. I think it's great if you learn something from it; if you don't, that's fine, as long as you enjoy it.

I know I am late on this but this is such an interesting video it is worth mentioning, for those who haven't seen this video yet.

Not only is this a fantastic creative video but it is a joy to watch, especially if you love 80's Video Games. This is such a happy and fun music video that anyone can enjoy watching. The special effects are on target! along with the camera direction, lighting and concept.

I've had the "Junior" Cd for about 3 weeks now, but I did not see this video till last week. I am loving the song even more now since ive see this. The video fits perfectly with the song!

MY ART

In the last blog entry I mentioned that I was working on an drawing based on the sketch I did to accompany the "triangle" post. I mainly draw realistic style art, but I wanted to try a different approach and style just to mix things up a bit. Also because I need the drawing practice.

I have included 2 versions of the drawing because I would like to get an opinion on which one looks better (I haven't decided on a title either). But the concept in one is: the hummingbird is about to take the nectar from her lips (instead of a flower/rose). And on the other one the small hummingbird is building her. I like both ideas, the first Idea was the main concept behind the art but in the process of cleaning up the line-art, I thought about the idea of a "gentle" piece-by-piece built by the little bird.

I would love to read your thoughts on this! Thank you.

Shahrul Nizam Selamat

Today I share with you the wonderful fantasy/sci-fi art of Shahrul Nizam Selamat.

It comes in a good time that I find Shahruls fantastic imaginative art, because this past week I have started to draw again a bit more then usual. I normally just have a typical quick sketching that only happens about every 3 to 4 months. But I should keep consistent with the practice, because I am extremely rusty at this point.

I am amazed that artists like Shahrul exist, as he is so effective to project a fantasy world in every piece. I have no idea how anyone can have an imagination where they can create so much detail and create a picture perfect surrounding that fit his characters. All the elements in his pieces are always cohesive with his compositions.

In my case I can create the main character, or the main focus point and concept, but I was never good at drawing a background or surroundings. I would not know where to start. But in the other hand you have Shahrul who has so much to offer in this aspect, and give you more then enough of it!.

Shahrul's color choices and accents are on-point. I can look at the water reflection in the first picture and separate myself from whatever I am doing at the moment. It is a joy to see his color combinations and perfect shading.

I will update you with the latest art piece I am working on in the next blog entry. I am trying a new style which was inspired by my experimention of the sketch in the previous post. Angle-tracker Brancolina wants to obtain poetry out of geometry as much as she can, one frame at-a-time.

Brancolina- Photographer based out of Antwerp, Belgium has amazing geometric captures that can be best described as abstract art. While she exploits the best spaces and angles in a shot, she also manages to attain a visual-escape in the linear world she presents.

Rectangular shapes, soft touches and delicate-color-rhythms become great accessories to a minimalistic composition. Her pictures can easily be mistaken for an effortlessly approach, and that she happens to have easy access to these surroundings. But a picture of the set of- red card invitations (third to last picture) can dismiss this thought and prove she can definitely project her creativity through her photographs. As she easily traps the angles of her liking.

Focused Blur

Leave it to a freshly-made-look, or a rained into an out-of-focus visual, is sometimes the decision the photographer takes at the very moment before clicking away. And some photographers can already know this approach will work in the composition as soon as they see the very object they are about to shoot.

An unfocused image can get lost in the surface or in the background with no regards to a clean-and-clear shot. But sometimes it is good to conserve a well focused blur and just show the inspired beauty that cannot be presented- by not displaying every-little-detail.

Whether it's the foreground or background, this style (if its well done) can definitely present a beautiful balance and make the leading role in the photograph stand out even more ( take a look at the last shot as an example, which is closer to a Bokeh style photo)

If you did not notice before, by now you can already tell that I love these visually tricky "I'm going blind" style photos. To me these focused blurs can be perceived as a smooth, dreamy, or a cotton-candy-like-texture. But in the other hand I can also see it as a smeared-focused shot with a will to run riot (in a imaginative sense). Both aspects combined explains why I like these spot-on images.

Andrew Archer

Andrew Archer is this months incinerator of my jealousy, when speaking about-the talent I wish I had. His work displays one of the best artistic talents I have seen in years.

Based out of New Zealand and only at the young age of 23, Andrew has already racked up a very decent list of clients. Ranging from: Vogue Fr, Penguin Books, Elle, New Scientist and Emi Music to name a few.

I am surprised that his work never came to my attention before. But I am glad to know about him and his art now, as this will also serve as a motivation for me to kick my self into gear and re-sharpen my drawing skills.

Another good thing to point out about Andrews art work, is that he mainly hand-draws and paints a large percentage of his work. This presents real talent in my opinion. Plus the style and color palette he chooses makes-it-all close to flawless in my eyes.

The first picture is extraordinary! the accents and colors are visually effective. But the second picture... wow, it is just poetry to me, there's glamour, there's darkness, there's perfection in the brush strokes. It's insanely amazing! I am very drawn to it!.

Face

I am loving the overall work from Face design group -based out of Mexico. Most of all I love the first sample you see here(Border Noise poster design). Although the Border Noise design represents a quite manic and frenzy look, it definitely co-ordinates with the identity of the project. The poster just demands a lot of attention immediately when you first view it. Also the sharp edges and shapes seem to replicate and represent a "noise" level visually. The vivid colors in all the right places adds to it, and it seems like you can almost hear the design break-out into pieces.

I had seen some of their work about a year ago in the Los Logos book ( I had come across it at Barnes & Noble) but I was not aware they did more then just logos. The consistent level of execution in their portfolio, with the projects that tie-in with the identity of their clients, seem to be their strong point. Chocolate Dreams

I am currently working on a design that involves a "chocolate" theme, and funny enough I happen to stumble upon this piece today. I am a chocolate addict and this piece (much to my delight) is filled with chocolate goodness.

"Chocolate Dreams" is the work of artist/graphic designer Rik Oostenbroek - based out of Netherlands. I have seen Rik's work before but not quite in the direction he is taking now. The previous work I viewed was more generic and commercial. It seems now that Rik is in the upwards hill of progression ( Though he was only 18 when he started to get a lot of buzz for his work). Now that he is 19 (turning 20 shortly) Rik seems to show a new direction of creativity and his art is evolving quite well. Rik's work will be all over the place before you know it.

I love his signature melted/distorted detail in the shapes, and the shine effects that add an edible/visually-tangible quality to-it-all.

A Touch Of Yellow

My attention in photography that I have been browsing through lately seem to mainly focus on the color Yellow ( for some reason it currently stands out to me in the composition).

When I think of yellow, it reminds me of the hot valley sun here in southern California... and I feel as if it slows-me-down a bit (much like the Yellow in a traffic light) Yellow also reminds me of summer and things related to summer.

Yellow can also make me feel outgoing, and very alive. It depends in what tone. A bright (somewhat fluorescent) yellow against a black background can become very vibrant and alive. It also very much reminds me of the beautiful Yellow that nature brings.

Shinichi Maruyama

Pieces of work like this reminds me that there's always a new angle to be found when you are trying to look for a new creative point-of-view in your own work. This is probably the best water photography I have seen to date. Shinichi Maruyama's approach is extremely inventive, but most of all, it seems that he has a love-connection to this natural element and the art of: finding the beauty of imperfection (Wabi-sabi). He exploits all his views and does a good job to present it in a beautiful manner.

Just the simple addition of black dyes to the water creates an amazing contrast I would've never thought about doing. Shinichi can afford to do without additional colors, keep it in a black & white format, and still hydrate our perception one-picture-at-a-time.

Rice Candy Magazine UPDATE#2

It has been a while since I talked about the magazine and everything else related to the magazine.

I will tell you in this post everything that is going on with the magazine. Also fill-you-in with information about my other projects that have taken me aside from Rice Candy.

Okay first... when I initially had decided to start the magazine I was getting help from a couple of people but that is no longer a fact. Later through the waiting period of collecting the content, I started to loose interest. Everything was taking too long and I wanted it done right there-and- then, I also felt I did not have enough content, and that was adding to it. Another thing that was floating in my mind alot was the thoughts about the economy and how I kept seeing magazines drop like flies left-and-right.

When it came around to getting all the content gathered-up I had already spent part of the money that was set aside for printing and other expenses the magazine could have.

Through the constant doubts about Rice Candy... I decided to take a break and focus on my other project that's been going on for some time as well. This other project is about a small line of eco-friendly designs, ranging from: shirts, bags, accessories etc, etc. (still in on the works and line slowly growing).

Through that period of time, I started to get a lot of recognition about my work /designs and started to get a lot of buzz from design websites left-and-right and then followed by a feature in world report design review (a European publication of innovation design from around the world) then days later another article in a design magazine in Istanbul, and then another magazine... and another.

Basically it took a design curator to show it to a few design websites and then it spread out. Also... I almost entered an international design contest, but I was honestly afraid of loosing and not getting any recognition for it, I did not want to feel that let-down (especially now since I was feeling justified for the work I was currently doing, plus all the positive attention). I spent a good time working on the competition but at the last minute decided not to go through with it. Everything was going good and I did not want to get distracted or feel down about my work (there is always next year) .

Overall... my website from my personal designs went that month from about 50 hits a month to 4,000 to 5,000 hits a month and people were actually buying my designs and for about a week I couldn't keep up with the production and decided to raise the price... but that only slowed-it-down, it never stopped it, It was crazy... ( it has slow down now).

Then I remembered how long I had been trying to get my designs viewed by others and how I had doubts about my ideas and concepts and thought maybe they where not as-good-as I had believed the whole time. This leads me to a similar role to the whole current phase of Rice Candy Magazine.

My line of designs was just like the making of Rice Candy Magazine: It had a couple of people or more involved at the beginning but later on that all fell apart, a lot of doubts in my designs and ideas, The money saved was somehow spent, It had gone through many changes and through 2 names and websites. A lot of times I lost interest and was just about to close it all down.

NOW... due to the personal and recent experience (mentioned above) I am more comfortable with the ups-and-downs and the rejections life will give you through these realms, along with the doubts and uncertainties. Plus the recent video of Jacek Putko (3 posts earlier) opened my eyes and refreshed my ideas behind this project (it was very much needed).

The magazine will get done but it will be done when I feel that is good enough to print. It is another task that will be done all by my self again... but I have no problem with that now.

If you want to know about my other work you can email me and I will give you the link along with all the information and names of the magazines and publications I purposely did not mention. I never wanted to mention my work/designs here on Rice Candy because I did not want to mix the 2 at all... (and in case someone types it in a search engine) one project has nothing to do with the other.

Why I'm I telling you all this? I felt I needed to be honest and inform you what was going on. And also in case some of you thought I did not want to make the magazine now.

My main idea and concept for Rice Candy still stands... I want this to be a very positive magazine... I don't want it to be about pretentious artists or designers; I don't want it to be about promoting non-sense or products for the sake of making a company rich, I want this to be AD-FREE. Also I don't want to present crazy, bold, visual content that some photographers do just to get attention to their work,its absurd (I don't care how "trendy" or popular it is). You can be creative without the need of gimmicks or controversial art.

If only 12 people will subscribe and/or buy the magazine, then I will only print that small amount. I am not afraid of the popularity so much now... just concerned that the actual final work comes out to my expectation and I am satisfied with it. If the first issue falls short... then I will work harder for the next issue and so on. I am not worried about selling a large amount of copies. I just want to continue making more issues because my mind and efforts is in the right place and this should be a fun experience. I can't go wrong if I have good intentions behind-it- all.

And now since I have giving you all this info about what happened in-BETWEEN- it-all I shall now show you the cover for the first issue. I wanted everyone to see the cover ONLY when the magazine was actually completed, but now I want some input about the lay out of the cover. The actual graphic design will stay the same but the titles of the articles and content can be moved around. I also want to start a short story right on the very COVER (per say a paragraph) and then continue it inside. I already have amazing ideas for the cover of the second issue... but I really can't change this one since the graphics have already been done. Any other inventive ideas for the cover are welcome if its amazing enough I will apply it and you will definitely get credits in the magazine.

Also I am looking for anyone who is good using Adobe in Design to help me out on a few pages of the magazine and possibly lend their ideas about the overall inside layout. Email me if you have any other ideas.

The last and final thing I would like to take a note from you is just get a general idea of how many of you would be interested in buying the magazine. If I know ahead of time it would be easier for me to crunch the numbers. I know there's quite a few of you already who have emailed me asked me to save a copy and I have a mailing list for those (but that list was from about 2 months ago). Therefore when you leave a comment on this post please place a "+1" if you are interested in possible getting a copy. The magazine right now as it stands will be $12.95 ( yes I know the image it states $13.95 but that's incorrect). The price could possibly change because I might LOWER it, but it wont be any higher.

Simon Priestly

3 wonderful shots from photographer Simon Priestly based out of the U.K.

I enjoy the calm that's being translated in his pictures along with a good-enough-touch of shadows that absorbs some of the edge and creates slight mystery to-it-all. Just the addition of a chair in large empty room with high ceilings sprouts a whole different feeling to the shot (that wouldn't have been there without it). This also amplifies the emptiness.

Also in the first picture you have the product of an experiment using several coloured torches fixed to a pin wheel (which reminds me of those old-school multi-colored lollipops) that sum up to compose a pleasant colorful shot.

Is "PRINT" dead?

Once again I ask myself the question about the death of: printed printed publications. I am glad I came across this short symposium on the subject.

Here Jacek Utko talks about the death of newspaper but at the same time talks about strategies that can definitely be applied in many areas of design and art when it comes to deliver a product or final finished piece. It is very uplifting and motivating to listen someone talk about different solutions in a logical method. It's also reinforces ideas I've had about my personal work when it comes to pushing my own abilities.

I think a lot of times we lower the bar for ourselves and never really get to taste our potential AT ALL, a lot of times we think we are going to walk right into a launching pad rather then work-to actually create it and construct it ourselves. I am extremely critical about my designs and art, but a lot of times I feel I bit odd about having such a strict discipline when it comes to my work and designs.

I think he said it best in his closing sentence "good is not enough"( now I don't feel that bad or odd).

PS. printed publications would not be an endangered species if more people approached things like Jacek.

Hawaii

I recently found this graphic art piece by design group Hawaii which immediately reminds me of liquid glass... If you can picture it- when it's in that toffee-like-state, a little after they have placed the dyes, and right before they stop for cooling.

The second one looks like to be an aerial view of a terrain shaped in a form of a rose. Very well done as an advertisement poster for Land Rover. And the in the last one I can't seem to make out what's going on in there, but it is interesting enough to mention. I do like the linear graph and the sense of a carbonated-wavelength in the frequency.

If you look at Hawaii's folio you will see they have so much more to offer. Not only are they good with graphic design but they are excellent in other areas of design including interior and identity design.

Heist-Pfeiffer

Pfeiffer- Is just one of the many pieces to summarize the work from Phil Dunne. This is from his latest series titled "Heist". I see the style of this particular piece as a character I would've seen if someone ever produced a BLADE RUNNER Anime movie. I also have respect for Phil's work ethics behind his art, because not only does he create computer graphics but he also takes it back-to-basics with a direct approach of a pencil & paper to illustrate. And this is something I very much criticize in new era of artist who are slaved to just using the power of a computer graphic software.

Since I have not posted here on on Rice Candy for about a month or so I will just start with quick posts here-and-there of a few things that captured my attention amidst all the madness that I was busy with in the last 2 months or so. I will also share with you some of the work I have been occupied with the whole time I was M.I.A . I also want to thank you all for your kind comments and emails. I will check my email box soon to repond to as many as I can asap.

Here I am once again displaying 7 of my favorites of the month. I have enjoyed looking at everyone's creative style and technique behind these photos. And like always the definitive factor I appreciate is the experimentation and intention to try different methods and techniques to achieve a fresher twist to-it-all.

The first picture above (By Jade Wright) is a versatile approach to long exposure photography, capturing not only the colors but the shape of the actual lights and creating yet another form all together. This colorful delight can be perceived as an x-ray of a colorful spine, or a vortex of lights captured in it's natural habitat(if that ever existed). This effect was created using a strobe light program in a cell phone and taking advantage of the rectangular light(with the intention of creating an overall form)

The rest of the photos are a perfect blend to keep things interesting and fulfill everyone's pallet.

MOODWALL

Moodwall (by Urban Alliance) is a 24 meter long interactive light wall installation in Amsterdam.

The Moodwall was recently completed to better serve pedestrians by transforming the atmosphere of a dark and unpleasant tunnel- to a colorful lit walkway that stimulates a joyous passage and a-more secure, safe feeling as you walk through.

Another task to better beautify and conserve the purpose of the installation was to add the grooves on the wall to deter graffiti. Last but not least, those grooves also serve to display (in a different angle) the colorful interaction from outside of tunnel. Therefore passers-by are inclined and invited to walk through (also prevents the tunnel to become a hang-out spot).

Overall this is a well thought-out, positive, idea to beautify an outer public space that is beneficial in various ways. Now... when are we going to get something like this in the U.S? It would be great to see something like this in the Los Angeles area.

Extremely innovative video by Xavier Chassaing using 35,000 photographs.

This is one to awaken your imagination and prove there is no boundary between illusion and reality. Xavier took advantage of the natural beauty life has to bring and enhanced it with colorful flames of energy (using a mix of stop-motion and live projection mapping techniques)

Keeping my visual signals alive by the images of creative Alistair Taylor. The provoking blur in his images trick me into paying more attention then the usual when viewing photography. It almost seems as if the blur in his pictures alter the silence of my breathing and make my eyes not want to blink for a few seconds longer.

Another magnetic detail for me is the focus on the lips that is evident in most of the images (I can't help but to feel that I am being pulled in). This is a perfect representation of visual poetry in fashion photography.

Hello everyone. After a much needed break I have returned better organized with my thoughts, ideas and intentions behind Rice Candy magazine. Thank you all for your emails with ideas, advice and intentions to help.

More then anything I needed to get a different perspective of it all. I needed to burst the bubble I was in, which was slowly shrinking and leaving me air-less. I needed new ideas and a break from this project.

With all that being said and done... I want to get right back into focusing a little more on the content behind the magazine. I want to start by taking more input from all you. I want to make sure that not only art and images will be generated by YOU, but also make sure you guys add ingredients to the articles in the magazine. I am sure a lot of the articles could have more opinions and thoughts from you integrated in them.

Now... let's get descriptive. I want to get a description to what loves means to you! And yes this will be part of an article in the magazine. I will continue to do this whenever I need more substance and opinions to add on the articles from now on. Thank you all for you input!

Rice Candy Magazine Issue 1 UPDATE!

I have news about the first issue of Rice Candy magazine. As you can tell I have not posted anything here on the blog for a few days now, and that is due to the time the creation of the magazine has absorbed. I also wish you could see the finished cover-art ... I love it! It is simple and goes well with the theme of the first issue!

As I was laying-out the magazine a few questions and slight problems surfaced. One being the deadline of the magazine.

I want to be clear to let everyone know that I am not stating that this magazine will not be completed. But just simply want to let everyone know that it will take longer then expected. I am basically expressing the fact that, the whole process in making Rice Candy Issue 01- will be done in s l o w - m o t i o n.

I can write here and tell you, bore you, with every itty bitty detail why the magazine is taking a long time ... but that would be pointless. But I do want to share with you some of my concerns.

1. I can finish the magazine in about a week and have it ready to be printed right after. But I am not satisfied with what I have so far. Meaning, I need more content that will flow smoothly with the concept of Rice Candy. I like what I have so far but I need MORE. I want the magazine to come out just like how I envisioned the final outcome to be like. Rather then make what I have so far dictate the outcome. It might be a stubborn move but... no matter what; this just doesn't sit right in my stomach. I am not saying I am a "perfectionist", but I can't settle with what I have just for the sake of finishing the magazine. It would not be fair to me or to any of you.

2. There's this push-and-pull precaution signal going on-and-off in my head about printing the magazine (influence largely by the economy). I know that once I finish the first one I am committed to continue bringing the rest of the issues. I am honestly scared at times and I think “should I just save the money and not print this". But there is also the other side of the coin that reflects the image of something uncompleted. And I really don't want to go the route of: starting something and not finishing it.

3. And just to add to my uncertainties I have been hearing this lately: “print is dead" and that online magazines is where it's at. To tell you the truth that is not very encouraging. And no I don't want my magazine to be one of those FREE magazines at your local record store or the ones given away when you walk out from a venue after a show. Or the ones you see outside supermarkets and art galleries in a small side-rack by the door.

I am not here to get rich by this at all. I do want to make sure that I have enough to print the next issue. Anyone who is involved in self periodical publications knows that there is no money there, just love for the project!

I do plan to get this distributed to large bookstore chains and as many newsstands as possible in the later issues. I do truly want this magazine to be mainly generated by YOU the reader. I want more of the content I have received so far and have more people involved and included as much as possible in the next issues. And that means in every area of the magazine.

I know I didn't have to tell you all this but I felt that you needed an explanation if any of you were wondering about WHEN the magazine was going to be finished and printed. This will get done... but just bare with me as far as the time of completion.

Also... something else I want to express and mention is MY THANKS. Thanks to all of you who have contributed and have offered to help. All the emails I get from people giving me tips and ideas and support with your kind words. When I see the images that I am including in this magazine it fires me up and makes me want to finish it as soon as possible. All the creative content and submissions is what I love to look at and share. All of this is what fuels me. I apologize if I don't email you back right away, or if I miss mailing you back but I do appreciate your input and ideas for the magazine and you can keep sending them.

Out of the Kiln

From the world of Etsy- here are a few pottery/ceramic pieces that incinerated my interest this week.

The first picture you see is a minimalist stoneware set by artist/crafter: Sara Paloma. Not only are her pieces wonderful to look at but she has an eye for presentation (and you can see an example of this from the shapes of her designs- all the way to the display arrangement in the photo). The simple photograph of her bowls create the appearance of a ceramic ripple made by an invisible drop (which was another factor that caught my attention).

Another pick-of-interest that stood out from the rest, are the necklace pieces by MyLittleChipmunks designs. The simplicity in their design, combined with stamp art, and an effective packaging (that is cohesive to the pendant design) makes for a complete and delightful product that anyone can be tempted to buy (for yourself or as a gift).

Just a few weeks in advance before Valentines Day, Nick Schmitz completes a wonderful typography poster called: " Pretty sure "

The curvaceous linear typography is hinting heart-shape forms everywhere, and is apparent, it is something you just can't ignore. Coincidentally this past week I have found a lot of LOVE themed designs all over the Internet, but this one takes the cake.

In any creative endeavor, it always helps to start with a good foundation. And In this case I am glad that the main foundation and theme in this design is something positive (that also contains a an overall playful touch). I look forward to finding a lot more delightful treasures like this poster, and more lovegraphy designs.

David's vector art immediately jumped out at me for all the right reasons. Most of his designs start with a relevant color theme which sets the backdrop for the whole idea. And therefore it is visually presented in a organized fashion.

His dynamic compositions and style mixed with the subtle shift in tones make for a perfect recipe. Then you have shapes that fade into other forms, plants and shadows, that ideally suits the ending result.

The illustrations are further complimented by images of women, to be the center of attention in each piece. Which in return adds a soft feminine undertone to it all.

Covering the diverse styles of photography this week. Here are 7 of my favorites for this month so far.

Today is also a good time to express a few words that are related to the content and context here at R C.

Ever since starting Rice Candy I have become more-and-more addicted to creative photography. Rice Candy has been a good outlet to display many inspirational sources.

For me photography and imagination elevates my inspiration. And through the tough of: what is real and artificial (in images) keeps my creativity in focus.

But there is always that question, and opinion. And that question, and opinion, is always up for debate. When it comes down to: determining whether it's actually good photography or not, and it often results with the conclusion, "It depends."

Is it a matter of taste? concept? composition?. While the idea can float along with the perception, I try to enjoy what my visual buds have-here-now, and share them with the ones who are interested, and leave the boring elements behind for the ones who enjoy that.

In the meantime... while most of us let the opportunity fade. I am glad we have individuals out there with a creative eye and a good trigger finger to take the shots and seize the opportunity.

I have always generalized the square shape with something simple and minimal. Sometimes I thought about it as: boring and empty. But it has also given me the impression of something organized.

A square shape can have perfect straight edges, or it can have curved smooth edges. The look of a basic square can also be simple. And for the fact that it's simple, it is also less challenging when you use it in a design or in a normal everyday task.

If you look around your room, 70% to 80% of your surrounding is squared or in a cubic/rectangular shape.

But at the end... the identity of the shape is different for everyone. Therefore I would like for you to share 3 immediate things that you identify the square shape with (the first 3 things that you think of)

Liquid Crash

Just before gravity gets the best out of these beautiful situations, Corinna captures these 3 images and saves the drops- before, and after, the moment of impact.

At the speed that most of us dream of seeing things with our eyes, nature is willing to share to those who can trap this very moment and forget about time (for our vision to indulge).

If only I could make a treaty with gravity to let go of the drop on the first picture (for me to see it float upwards for just a brief moment). But for now I atleast have these photographs to look at... why ask for more.

Napkin Designs

This is the Napkin Designs post I had mentioned earlier. I want to see how far we can take this.

Maybe start with at least 50 napkin prints, and have it as ongoing post and continue to add pictures from ALL who want to contribute (I would really like more then 50, I am shooting for 101)

I have always been distracted by good napkin logo/design. Therefore I want to have a good diverse collection from all over the world. But I want it to mainly be from: cafes, tea-houses, coffee shops (I can accept: small convenience stores, juice/smoothie bars, frozen yogurt bars and supermarkets). NO restaurants or store bought napkins.

To start it off I am posting the first 3 Napkin designs. Hope all of you can contribute at least one design. All I would need is a picture of your the napkin, laid flat, and the shot taken from the top (just like the first 3 you see above)

Jan 11th A slow Sunday like all Sundays (I always see Sunday as a lazy day)

Sunday to me is the PAUSE button of the week. It seems I never get anything done on Sundays. And rarely do I get a boost of inspiration on this day. But I do fight it... for a short time, but there is always an attempt.

I bring this up because this picture can closely describe how I cannot come up with a creative idea even though I know there is light inside the bulb. It seems that I have to break through the thin glass shell in order to release a bright idea.

The photograph above is another piece by Brock Davis (known as Laser Bread). He continues to deliver thought provoking images and trigger inspiration through his art pieces.

Excellent collection of linear-graph designs made by experimenting with tapes (forth picture down), mazes, and symbols that can signify various meanings (depending on how you perceive it). And even though all his designs seem to root from the same theory, they are all very distinctive.

In the last couple of years the steampunk love affair has expanded into a mainstream trend more then ever. At the same time, the art and craft representing this genre has evolved rapidly.

I have no idea what a couple of these photos are. But I think it is best left without knowing and just enjoying it visually for what it is.

Hallways, Corridors and Alleys # 1

Small photograph collection of hallways, corridors and alleys.

Just a few good photos I found recently. The white hallway and the Kyoto alley shot (second from the top) are my favorite. But I like them all a lot. Even though they are all different, they all contain a wonderful element.

In another note... I am going to start a large napkin collection. Maybe a total of 50 napkin prints from all over, and have it as ongoing post and continue to add pictures from ALL who want to contribute. I will start that post tomorrow or the next day (I have always been distracted by good napkin logo/design).

Colorful vector designs by 23 year old artist aYib Makmun Arif based out of Indonesia.

Just a few samples of his work I found. The first one is a Valentine's Day theme design. The second one is a color factory (If Willy Wonka had a color factory it would look somewhat like this) and the last design is a collection of vector graphs shaped into a fragrance bottle.

I really like the soft levels in the colors he applies, and also how he wraps the vector forms to create another shape. Great work overall.

Creative Ads #1

Here are a few ads I found around the city that I thought were creative.

One was attractive visually, and one got a message across. Either way I found all ads to be good examples of advertisement that made sense in their own aspect.

I will place more effort in the future to hunt down and retrieve more creative ads from around Los Angeles. Here are a few to start it off.

( 1) H&M ad at the Roosevelt Hotel

( 2) Nike poster design at the Nike pop-up store at the Moltanvan Theater

( 3) Damages advertisement at Universal Studios bus station.

Now a brief breakdown :

(1) I love the photography and the colors and how they blend in. But how on earth do these people get that up there like that... it almost as if it was painted on (and yes those are the colors that are in season).

(2) Good illustration and idea . Rather then adding so many crazy graphics and colors they just added an effect to display the shape of the Nike shoe, which is the most important focus-point in the poster, but a lot of times in these new graphic designs the main focus gets lost (and with that added silver color makes it all the better).

(3) Well this one is self explanatory, which is why I like it so much. It made me laugh a little when I first saw it. But it's an inventive way to get the point across. Good sport for the actor at the bottom to just get down on the floor like that to deliver the message.

I am not quite sure why I like this poster design. Could it be the line art that is predominant all over the design? Maybe the color fades that give the shapes a sense of dimension? Or the intriguing look combined with it all.

3 things that come to mind when you see ...

Since one of the main subjects I want to focus in the coming weeks is: SHAPES. I decided to start off with the CIRCLE shape first. I would like to learn how this shape appeals to you and the judgment that comes from it.

In my opinion, out of all the shapes, the CIRCLE is the most complete shape of them all. I almost feel that the circle cheated and got away with not having to deal with other complicated angles. It is almost as if the circle took the easy route. To show off its infinite close curve, to stay simple, but well guarded at the same time.

Another point to bring out is ... how do you perceive the circle as? Is it a feminine or a masculine shape? or a well balance combination of both?

Aside from my opinions I would like to know yours and what you relate to when you think of a circular shape or form. What are three things that come to mind first?

The first 3 things that I think about are: Clocks, The letter "O", and the circular rim of a cup.

Christmas Ice

In the spirit of Christmas, here are 3 photos from Whitney Kate.

In the first photo the effect that is created by the ice covering the Christmas lights is wonderful (almost fairy tale like).

The second one is, well.. self explanatory. But the last one has a great perspective and focus on both the front objects and background. It could possibly be the point of view of an elf (peeking at the house from behind the tree branches).

Call Me

I have always seen the phone booth as an encasing for the phone. The booth served as the packaging and the phone box as the product. But I always saw the shapes within the phone booth as an obvious battle.

First there was the square box, with the square dialing buttons and the rectangular coin return slot. Versus- the curvaceous phone piece with the segmented rings that make the cord, plus the round holes in the ear piece and talk piece.

Taking all that into account, I never understood why they could not make the phone booth more attracting and appealing to the eye (or just a better and smarter design over all). I believe they could have at least changed the colors rather then just use dark stale colors. What about the use of plastic? why not use brushed stainless steel for the hear/talk piece?. It would have looked better, lasted longer and have been a lot more sanitary.

Overall the phone booth design and use was always an easy contrast for me to spot. I was reminded about all of this because of the picture above, which has such a beautiful contrast as well, but a similarity at the same time.

You have a wall filled with words expressed by others to communicate to a certain extent. The wall speaks loudly telling a story in a blink of words left by previous individuals, while the phone stays quietly not displaying the many communications, expressions and words that have gone through it.

On the phone there have been words that traveled miles away but really have gone nowhere. And on the wall you have words that also have never been anywhere, but have been transported miles away by the many eyes who read them.

The above image you see is a photograph titled "Call Me" by photographer Emiko Franzen from F2 images. For me this was a great composition and one of my favorite- thought provoking- images I have come across this year.

Dualform- Playful forms and shapes

Playful forms and shapes by graphic designer Dualform from Russia.

Since our main focus has been "colors" lately, I thought this would be a good transition to go from COLORS to SHAPES. Because SHAPES will be the main focus behind most of the creative posts here soon and good topic for all of us to analyze .

Dualform's graphic art is both playful and colorful. But visually entertaining. I could see these pieces as wallpapers or for a printed calendar. My favorite is the one is at the top, named "mindblock". I enjoy the color scheme and I can relate to the title (due to the fact that I find myself here quite often).

Sputnick seems to capture a lot in images that are minimal yet coated with a peculiar mood in every shot. The almost cinematic style is what initially attracted me, combined with the focus play of the camera.

The picture in the middle ("Air of December") is a good example of- when to present a black & white photograph.

Abelha Cachaca

More and more alcoholic drinks are turning to organic ingredients. And the recently launched (in the U.K) ABELHA Cachaca spirit is another good example of this trend.

ABELHA is new premium Cachaça from Brazil that is 100% organic. What is Cachaca you might ask? Cachaca is a Brazilian sugar cane distillate spirit. It is one of the main fermented alcoholic drinks consumed in Brazil.

Another thing I was drawn to initially was the sticker design on the bottle. I like the fact that they kept the colorful hand-drawn design for the labels. It adds to the natural theme of the product.

Trapping Lights

Here are three, good, creative examples of lights captured while in motion.

The first one is a shower of colorful light trails capture while going through a tunnel in a Christmas train.

The second one is my favorite (by photographer Khristal Mae). Different colors are captured at the precise time that they separate. The picture was taken from a moving vehicle. Glad to see that she caught different colors of the spectrum in the shot. Any sooner or later and maybe the picture wouldn't have had this wonderful result.

The third one is different because... rather then being in a moving state, the actual object that had the light was captured while in motion and leaving a fiery blue trail.

This could be the theme in an upcoming Rice Candy magazine issue.

Amazing, realistic urban landscapes, containing a special element that transports you to that very moment and place, is John Salminen's specialty. Although you might have seen this style before. It has never been executed to match John Salminen's skills.

ART CONTEST!! Rice Candy Magazine (UPDATED)

First I want to apologize for not posting an entry yesterday. Time Warner in my area had technical difficulties basically for the whole day. The connection was just available this morning.

On another note, I am presenting a small art contest (which I hope most of you will get involved) for the presenting page of the Art section in the magazine. This will be the first page in the art section that will showcase all of the art submissions.

We were initially thinking about making the page black and have the line art (pictured above) in white (inverted). But since the main theme for the magazine is "COLORS" we might want to have this section a little more colorful (If there is a submission that will tie in well with the magazine).

You can click on the image above to enlarge, then right-click to save it (do not resize). After that you can color it with Photoshop, Illustrator or any other graphic illustration software you please. If you don't have an illustration program, you can just print out the line art and color it as you wish. Later scan it and email it to us.

We will post the best submissions here for all of you to vote. The maximum each person can submit is only 3. This contest is open to everyone. The winning entry will be printed in the magazine and receive illustrator credit.

You can use any color that suits you, but do not include additional words or negative symbols/images of: Skulls, Weapons (Guns, Bullets, etc, etc), Nudity, Drugs, or anything that is repulsive or offensive. Remember this is a positive magazine for everyone to read and none of this is needed.

This will be the first of many more contests to come. Therefore... get creative, get colorful and get artistic! Deadline is Saturday Dec 20th.

Andy Gilmore

Symmetrical digital graphics by New York based artist Andy Gilmore.

Good use of symmetrical shapes, shades and the color spectrum. Making the eyes very responsive to the images.

Perhaps another thing to consider is the use of the color: Black, which makes everything stand out more and make the eyes appreciate the variety and richness of all the colors. Which also contributes for the shades and shadows to easily blend in.

I could easily see these pieces framed, and on my wall.

Robert Kohring- Blue tones

Beautiful photography by Robert Köhring based out of Germany.

There are so many good photos in this collection that I couldn't decide on a definite pick. Instead I just decided to stay with the theme of -different tones of blue.

These are great examples of good blue tone photography. Love the angle in which he photographed the angel (on purpose) to capture the blue light behind the statue to create that effect. My favorite picture at the top was an experiment which he did with an incense cone and a flashlight... just amazing!

3 things you relate to...

After enjoying last week's post of "3 things you think about when you see..." I decided to do another one. I will try to do this more often but only when the subject arises.

I was hunting for photography like always (yes I am clearly addicted). And came across this photograph by Russell Frost... (yes a second picture by him here at rice candy) I couldn't stop staring at it (I should contact him one of these days to chat about things when time lends me a favor).

Now back to the subject. When I saw the colors in the photograph I immediately thought about Christmas. And with all the craziness that has been going around here lately I haven't had a chance to really go out and take a look at all the Christmas related installations, lights and ornaments around the city.

Last time I asked you 3 things you think about when you see the color red. But today I want to ask you the opposite and a little more.

My request is, if you could share with me 3 things you relate to, when someone mentions Christmas. But from those 3 things, I want them to be in touch with different senses (hearing, touch and vision). Meaning : 1 shape, 1 word, 1 color.

Examples of mine are: Star (shape), December, Green

I like the effect of the color chips breaking off at the top ( like quantum; representing energy and momentum). He did a great job in projecting and incorporating the theme into the composition.

Typography Portrait

"Utada Hikaru" by the artist that goes by the name of Ashed-Dreams based out of Malaysia.

It looks like a lot or work and time went into this piece. I love the idea, angle, and the execution of this complex illustration. I don't know what most of those words mean... but every inch spells out creativity to me.

Just Imagine that there is a wondrous world out there, where all of us are made of unspoken words...yet transparent. And those words describe the meaning of us. And at the extraction of one of those meanings, we are easily deconstructed (or better constructed?).

Hmm... not so far from reality.

5 photos from French male photographer that goes by the name of "lullaby"(his name was not noted anywhere in his profile).

I like the fact that he takes advantage of the colors he sees. And also the good judgment not to use them when they are not needed. From the shadows, smeared light trails, an image trapped in a glass, and the many eyes I see. Makes me I appreciate "lullaby's" attempt to experiment with something different in every shot.

RICE CANDY MAGAZINE (updated)

I was going to post about this later in the coming weeks. But now seems as good a time as any.

First I would like to thank all of you for taking your time to visit my blog/site. I encourage you to keep in touch as there will be new things coming soon for ricecandy, like contests and a magazine (a printed publication) in the works along with other projects. I will try to have as many readers as I can involved in these projects, because Ricecandy is all about interaction with the creative community. Some of you may have already received an email about this. But now that all of this is mentioned, I will be looking for contributors for the magazine in the following categories:

Writers, Photographers, Illustrators, Proof Readers, etc, etc. And basically any one who has a good idea to contribute. I am also looking for someone with presentation skills that can (with a pleasant clear voice, guy or girl) do a voice over for another project (all you would have to do is read an already composed article or description).

And last but not least I need a good cover for the first issue. I want the first issue to have a delightful image that will be coherent to the style you can already see here at Ricecandy.net. Therefore I am looking for a cover artist, or photographer (and if you are neither but still have a good idea? you can submit your idea as well). One of the main articles and possibly cover title you will see in the cover will be ABOUT "colors". I am working on the article already but not a definitely title (this is just reference for the one interested in designing the cover) NOTE: click on the picture to obtain a larger image of the blank cover for you to work your idea.

I will update this post later to break down each category and what I am looking for in better detail.

Now...I could do the cover and the articles myself and possibly most of the magazine, but that's not what this is about. Ricecandy.net is about trying to get creative, POSITIVE minds involved; especially those who want their work to see the light of day (in a full color printed magazine). There are so many bloggers who like to write, so many of you who love to photograph or illustrate and a lot of you with great creative ideas.

With all of the above being said. If you would like to see your work in this magazine e-mail me with your idea or work sample you would like to contribute to the magazine. All of the contributors will get their work and name printed along with contact information to their blog, site or portfolio they would like readers to be redirected to.

PLEASE leave a comment about this project (everyone's opinion is recommended) and later email me if you want to elaborate. I will be checking back here to read everyone's feedback to this post. I appreciate everyone's attention.

-More writers! I need more articles to be included!

-Creative Writing. I will be accepting creative writing submissions now also.

-General Design/Original Product- Fashion Garment, Product Design , Home Decor , Industrial Design, or any unique item that is your original design please submit it. Also if you have written and published a book that is- art/design/fashion/photography related submit that as well (I will have a small section to review products).

-Misc- If you have a creative idea that you think can be part of the magazine please submit it.

REMINDER: Please try to send all your images in high resolution (7x7" 305 dpi). Also do not send anything that describes negativity. I will not accept any image or work that includes SKULLS, BULLETS, GUNS, NUDITY and DRUGS or any symbolic image that is offensive and negative.

Rice Candy magazine will be mainly generated by the creative community but in a positive way. This will give an opportunity for those who have never, or want their work showcased in a magazine. From the breaking of the piece, to the color splash, this commercial was a joy to watch!.It was both stimulating and soothing to the eyes.

I like how they turn your attention at the beginning with the sounds of the chocolate being broken off, to the crackling bite, then zooming in to take your visual attention for a short and enjoyable journey. This commercial was well made and to the point, simply a delight.

When it comes to coffee

Not many times have I seen simple and logical design when it comes to the identity of a product like you see above by HGV.

Why can't other brands here in the U.S have a relative design concept to pair up with the identity of their main product when it comes to large cafes/coffee shops chains?. Just by looking at the pictures I am immediately craving a cup of coffee (or hot cocoa).

I never understood what the GREENS and the REDS had anything to do with coffee. Yet I keep seeing them in all the major coffee shops (in their logos, napkins, cups, etc, etc) Does anyone have an idea why they use those colors?

Not only did HGV Design ltd. use a relevant color, but as you can tell they also created custom fonts (to give a slight subliminal reminder). HGV definitely does NOT lack creativity or the injection of smart logical design!

3 things you think about when you see ...

Art is all around you... and so are colors. In this article I would like to subtract an ingredient from the last post. As you noticed, the first (and possibly main) point of attraction in the last set of photographs was the color Red.

This time around I would like to get an opinion (as I will share mine first) about what exactly you think when you immediately see the color Red. The reason I ask is because this site is about creativity. And the ability to draw or paint, has nothing to do with having a CREATIVE mind.

Example: When I pick an article of clothing, food, gift, or any item with a dominant color, I immediately make a decision based on what that color reminds me of (most likely a hidden signal from my subconscious?). Sometimes that makes me take a positive or negative decision due to that judgment.

When I saw the color red the last time, I immediately thought about: Russia, Communism, and blood. This might seem funny, but that is what I honestly thought about initially when I saw the color. Many different things come to mind later but that is the root of my color matching criteria for Red. And due to this ... I believe it could be a slight creative block or maybe the other way around.

Since I have now shared my thoughts and opinions about the subject. I would like to get yours. I would like you to share 3 things that you immediately think about when you see the color RED.
It would be interesting to see a spectrum of thoughts and opinions about this color.

Provacative Red

It has been said that the color Red attracts positive energy. With that being said... I present to you three appealing photographs from Viola Violante.

At first, due to the reflection and angle in which she captured the Red photograph, made me wonder if it was a painting or an art installation and therefore became intriguing enough for me just to love it for what it was.

In the second picture: Are the tea leaves in a steeping state? Or are they being flushed? I am pleasantly distracted with the photograph that I quickly forget.

Last but not least... well, there is so much going on in this black & white photo. But at the same time there isn't. And it's because I can't understand the language. This in return makes me feel comfortable with all that information.

Overall I like the consistent quality and variety in Viola's photo collection. There are more interesting picks in her photostream. Take the time also to look at her profile, which makes her photographs a little more special.

SEEDS

Another art piece from the artist "7R". I just couldn't pass up not posting this amazing illustration. I found this piece through the 1800 Tequila design submissions (my favorite bottle in the user gallery).

The name of this piece is called "Seeds". I like the interpretation of the leafs, buds and grass, and also how the seeds are presented in different sizes and stages. The other main ingredient is the drawing of the girl in grayscale, which to me is perfect and helps display all the green tones very well. Simply lovely and visually refreshing .
